blue october – spinning the truth around (part 1)

This is a beautiful album. An album, composed of songs which have been nurtured and designed to evoke attention, and to entice the listener in. Blue October is a band which has clearly had a thought process when creating Spinning The Truth Around (Part 1), and that process has worked to a high level. Deeply insightful, the record sparks moments when you’ll feel in sync with it, cascading softly into its unique atmosphere.

The lyrical content has been produced not as a second thought, but as a major slant, a triumphant piece of an original puzzle. At moments, they capture the essence of sadness, and this sadness only increases the likability. The vocal work shivers in and the lyrics do their job as carriers of momentous stories that aren’t all jubilant.

Blue October knows they’ve struck gold with this record. It connects on a different level, and the emotion is everywhere, bubbling inside their hearts and minds. It should resonate with listeners far a wide too, spreading like wings.

Spinning The Truth Around starts the record. It’s a calm and collected track, but such a commanding effort. Lyrically, it tells us that love has no place, and it is withering fast. Such a brilliant opening, it tingles the spine. Don’t Say It Wasn’t Love opens like a slow burn, but it’s perfectly poised, and the chorus sparks a frenzy describing love. The Girl Who Stole My Heart starts slowly, and it conjures up emotion deep within the soul. The vocals aren’t fully suppressed, they’re there as a pivotal component as always. This is a sad song, a track that resonates.

Blue October is an original act with big ideas. Their music soothes, but also has elements of sadness rippling through its themes.

I love Blue October. Finally, a band who understands on all levels and put my feelings into words and expresses them so completely. I was so very heartbroken when I had to miss them in concert on March 2, 2023 at the Adler in Moline, IL. I was given tickets for Christmas to see them and was so excited. My husband did buy me their CD ‘This is What I live For’ at the Merch table and asked Justin to sign it for me. Hoping they tour close by again soon.
