Trending Single Reviews: Scream the Prayer 2012 edition

By Ryan G

In honor of our upcoming Scream the Prayer 2012 coverage (appearing exclusively with our friends at Mezzic), here are four songs that are trending from artists on this year’s Scream the Prayer tour!

Sleeping Giant – “Tithemi”:  This worship anthem is basically a 3+ minute long breakdown.  The lyrics are repetitive but justifiably so – it is worship and nothing more, nothing less.  Harsh vocals take a backseat to gang vocals until the end of the song.  If there were ever a song where hardcore dancing could be translated into an act of worship, it would be this one.  The boldness of the band will probably continue to alienate the ANGR records band from sectors of the hardcore fanbase but that is probably the least of the band’s concerns.

mychildren mybride – “God of Nothing”: This Solid State Records group has been in the past criticized for playing generic, unmemorable metalcore.  They break the cycle with this single, which carries obvious Korn influences without being a rip-off.  The success of this single is only emphasized by the well-shot, creepy music video which is markedly different from the goofy vibe projected by their video for “On the Wings of Integrity.” Expect metal kids to go nuts for this one in the pit.

Gideon – “Prodigal Son”:  The up and coming Facedown Records band released this powerful anthem on identifying with someone who has lost their way, just like the biblical Prodigal Son.  What first sounds like a glitch in the recording soon becomes evident to be a build up to the first breakdown amidst their cry of “Restoration!”  The staccato guitar makes an appearance again in the breakdown-esque chorus which declares “I am the prodigal son!” I expect this would be enjoyable live.

Your Memorial – “Redirect”:  This single is in the same vein as Gideon albeit with more theocentric focus and less on human struggle.  Lyrically the focus is on God’s attributes in the chorus especially.  Vocally the band treads closer to deathcore territory but instrumentally the band remains planted in metalcore.  It isn’t the most memorable song ever, but it is very passionate.
